Sazrah Interviews Pryme Kingz about their X-Factor Experience So Far....

11/9/2013

So.. I was watching The Xtra Factor on ITV2 the other night and who do I see? My uni friend with his rap group Pryme Kingz standing in front of X-Factor judges Louis Walsh, Sharon Osborne, Nicole Scherzinger and Gary Barlow singing their heart out! I know X-Factor comes with a lot of drama, stories and conspiracies so I've always wanted to hear a contestants  point of view about how the show is run. And this was my chance! I caught up with the boys to find out what X-Factor is REALLY about for those who are involved in it...

So let's get straight to it! Some people describe X-factor as fake and pretentious. After being on it and seeing how it runs, what are your thoughts on this statement?
Ultimately they’re trying to make an entertaining show. Without showing the best and the worse you’d be sitting at home basically watching average people singing with average voices in a room with no stand out visuals. I’m sure everyone would prefer to watch something with a little more edge and excitement. There’s definitely a lot more going on behind the scenes that the average person wouldn’t have guessed but why reveal the magician’s secret? Just enjoy the show!

Your first audition aired last weekend. How did you prepare for it?
There was a lot of thought put into our first audition. First thing to pick was the song- after a long debate we decided to do a Justin Bieber song. Our primary reason for picking this was to give an element of shock to the audience, also add some versatility. Everyone would expect us to do a Tinie Tempah song, Jay-Z song or something like that. In reality all of us in Pryme Kingz like to push the boundaries a little, plus it gives a chance to show that we can do all types of music and make it our own. Next to prepare was our image.

So how do you go about that? Especially when there are so many other images to compete with as everybody wants air-time!
We wanted a look to match our personalities. The worse possible thing would be to come across as dull. We decided from early that at all stages of the competition at least one of us would be wearing a t-shirt with our Pryme Kingz logo (mainly so people remember our name, but also to promote our merchandise). For our first audition we agreed that La’al should wear the Pryme Kingz logo tee, Freeze should wear our PDM Sweatshirt and Prelude DM chose to wear his Lazy Oaf jumper (which he is selling now >click here<).

You gave the judges your merchandise which they seemed to like! Who came up with that plan?
During an early stage of the competition one of the X-Factor researchers advised us to bring some of the Pryme Bearz we made as part of a Christmas competition we did in 2012. Of course only being three of us, there was only three bears- we just thought: “rather than make an extra bear, lets make some good TV and stick one of our Pryme Kingz beanies on Louis Walsh” - it seemed to go down really well! A lot of people found it funny.

After your first audition you received some criticising feedback from the judges, which feedback affected you the most? The positive or the negative?

It was mainly the feedback suggesting that we need to improve our vocals. Understandably so as well because to be honest we completely flopped our first audition! The vocals were nowhere near as good as they sounded in rehearsal. It was just nerves I guess? It’s quite different actually being in that room than how easy it looks watching from home on TV. On a positive note, to hear Louis say he wants to see us in an arena and the compliments all round about our energy and vibe really boosted our confidence. We were nervous and at one point we all truly felt like we had ruined our chances of going through so the reaction was a relief and a blessing. Prelude DM’s stand out moment was definitely when Nicole Scherzinger said he had “an amazing voice”.

Which audition so far have you preferred best? And Why?
Although it was nice to meet the judges in an almost one-on-one environment, we would all agree that the second audition was more fun. Aside from the fact you’ve had first hand feedback from the judges themselves, it was just a great feeling to perform in front of thousands of people at Wembley Arena. It’s an amazing experience that many people don’t get to have and we are thankful to get that opportunity.

Well, we all are looking forward to watching your stage performance when it airs! ..So what is your current highlight of your X-factor experience?
Meeting the contestants, presenters and all the backstage staff. There are some really nice, talented people you meet along the way. It’s really fun!! We wish everyone we meet/met all the best with their futures.

What has been the low light?
Low lights? - At the moment …it’s got to be waiting outside the London Excel Centre on that very first audition lol. We were waiting from the night before so that we could be first in line. 12 hours in UK April weather- It was FREEZING! It was so cold that we were taking turns going into the Premier Inn toilets and warming our feet under the hand dryers! At one point we considered writing wills with our final wishes.

HA HA! And on THAT note, any final thoughts?
Yeah, we just want to say thank you for having us today Sazrah. We are all big fans of what you do and it is truly an honour to do this interview.
